What Do Your Values Say About Your Business?

Recently, I have been geeking out on how our values affect the subconscious mind and our behaviors. Our values say a lot about us as individuals and could determine the success of our business.

How do we come up with values? Where do we learn them initially and how do they affect everything we do?

Let’s get deep on the subject of values for a moment.

Our values are stored in the unconscious mind and therefore, affect our psychology. If you aren’t reaching a goal no matter how hard you try, it’s likely that your subconscious mind is sabotaging your efforts. But why would it do that?

It’s because your behaviors didn’t align with your core values. When there’s a conflict, you’d inevitably self-sabotage.

Our values represent what’s important to us. They determine what we do and what we have done so far. They have a significant influence on whether we achieve the outcomes we want. Especially in your business.

If you want to get to the root cause of your challenges and understand why you do what you do, you need to get in touch with your values and understand where they come from.

The Influences That Shaped Your Values

To understand how our values affect us, we need to look at their evolution at the different stages of our lives. Here are the critical stages according to Dr. Morris Massey:

Imprinting Period (age of 0-7)

Parents and people around you (e.g., family members, teachers) imprinted their values upon you. These influences started to affect your way of thinking, doing and being.

Modeling Period (age 7-14)

The person you idolized the most during this period of your life is reflected in who you are today.

For example, I loved I Dream of Jeanie growing up. I wanted to be like Barbara Eden in so many ways. I was secretly obsessed and I truly believed I could create things (magic) just like Jeanie. Today, this translates into my ability to manifest the things I want. My husband used to joke about this until he realized I really know how to make things happen!

Who was the person you idolized most during this modeling period?

At this stage, you also began to find your place in society. You started to ask yourself, “Do I want to keep the values I adopted from my parents and the people around me?”

Socialization Period (age 14, maybe earlier)

This is often called the teenage rebellion years. You began to test the boundaries of the values you have developed. You might have rejected those that didn’t resonate with you. Keep in mind, this all happened at the subconscious level so you probably weren’t aware that you were filtering and testing.

Business Persona Stage (age 21-35)

Developed by William James, this is the stage when we venture into the business world to find out which values are important. During this time, you’d likely be wondering, “How do I want to show up in the world? What is my belief system?”

Your Values Drive Your Behaviors; Your Behaviors Determine Your Results

Have you ever set a goal but didn’t achieve it no matter how hard you try, even if you seemed to be doing all the right things? You might notice that although your conscious mind was set on the goal, your behaviors didn’t align with the desired outcomes.

Here’s why that’s happening: 88% of the power of our mind comes from the subconscious mind!

The conscious mind is the goal setter and the unconscious mind is the goal-getter. As much as you might consciously want something to happen, you won’t achieve the desired outcomes if your unconscious mind is not on board.

Since our values are deeply rooted in our subconscious mind, they also have a significant influence on your behaviors and therefore, whether you can achieve consistent results.

In fact, your values drive most things that you do in all areas of your life, including health, family, relationships, and business. If you haven’t been getting your desired results, it’s time to shift your values.

Shift Your Values To Achieve Your Business Goals

Changing your values requires the willingness to dig deep and get clear on who you are and what you want for your business.

Here are a few questions from Tony Robbins to help you get started:

  • What do my values need to be so I can create my ultimate destiny, be the best person I could be, and have the biggest impact in my lifetime?
  • What do I have to eliminate from my current set of values so I can achieve my goals?
  • In what order do my values should be to achieve my desired outcomes?
  • How would I benefit from arranging the values in such a hierarchy?

After you get clear on your values, then it’s time for the rubber to meet the road — apply your values to achieve your business goals.
