2020 has taught us that we need to be bold with our life… or “go home.” For 2021, let’s start the year with an advanced goal setting method that works.

We know that if you create a plan and activate that plan, you’ll have a greater chance of reaching your goal. The challenge for most people is that they don’t have a thorough enough plan.

How do you make a good plan?

“Begin with the end in mind,” as Steven Covey says in his book, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

A while ago, I attended a workshop during which I was asked to lay out my life story by writing my obituary. It was a powerful exercise. I had to answer questions such as, “What will people say at your funeral? What did you accomplish during your lifetime? What kind of legacy did you leave behind? And lastly, what will your obituary say about you?”

If writing out your obituary doesn’t feel too morbid to you, I invite you to go for it! Then, work backward to see how you can achieve everything you’ve written. What kind of legacy will you leave? Can you picture all of your accomplishments?

What would the title be If a movie was written about your life?

Once you know what you want to accomplish before you leave this earth – create a 10-year vision, a five-year vision, and a 1-year vision.

Do you find it hard to think so far ahead? I get it. However, if we don’t set goals far enough into the future, we may fall victim to my favorite quote of all time:

“Don’t live the same year 75 times and call it a life.” ~ Robin Sharma

Here’s how to effectively set long-term and short-term goals for your life, starting with the most important thing — your mindset.

Take Responsibility For Your Life

Living a great life doesn’t happen by chance. We need to run our businesses and live our lives intentionally. As Jim Rohn once said, “If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.”

We must plan to weather out different situations. Some days will be sunny and others, like the pandemic, will be stormy. Some people took positive action while others chose to blame external circumstances. Some left the beauty industry altogether. Most of us feel as if we were dealt a terrible hand this year. While we can’t control the circumstances, we can control how we respond to these circumstances and the actions we take.

Life is about taking responsibility. Let’s be honest here. If you don’t reach your long-term or short-term goals, it’s because you chose not to take action. Unless you’re willing to accept responsibility for your life, you won’t be fully empowered to achieve what you set out to do.

Goal Setting Method: Set Your Long-term and Short-termGoals

Now that you’re taking responsibility, it’s time to set goals.

What is your legacy and what do you need to accomplish to make it happen? Who do you need to become in order to accomplish your goals? Setting goals helps us improve all areas of our life, not just our esthetic business.

Write out your life goals in the following 6 areas of life:

  1. Mindset
  2. Health
  3. Career
  4. Family
  5. Friends
  6. Spiritual

Advanced Goal Setting Method: 10-Year Plan

Look 10 years ahead and imagine where you’ll be. What would you be doing? Who would you like to become? If a movie was made about your life…what would the title be?

Think about your 10-year vision. What have you accomplished? Why do these long-term and short-term goals matter to you? How much money will you be paying yourself? And most important of all, how do these goals help you achieve your legacy? What is your 10-year plan in the six areas of life?

Advanced Goal Setting Method:  5-Year Plan

Your 5-year goal should be a major stepping stone to your 10-year vision. A 5-year plan gives you a checkpoint to make sure that you’re on track.

What will you accomplish in 5 years? How much is your business making in terms of revenue, profit, and impact? Are you where you need to be to achieve your 10-year goal? What is your 5-year plan in the 6 areas of life?

Advanced Goal Setting Method: 1-Year Plan

This goal can be the hardest to nail down because it’s the closest time-wise. However, it’s important to get clear on your 1-year goal as it allows you to get very thorough with your planning. List out your goals in the 6 areas of life, as mentioned for your 10 and 5-year plan.

I like to break my goals down into monthly, weekly, and daily objectives. This can help you figure out what exactly you need to do every single day to get you where you want to be.

Such granularity helps you decide yes or no when something comes your way. Determine if it’s in alignment with your goals and discern what’s right for you.

Achieve Your Long-Term and Short-Term Goals – The Power of the Word “No”

If you have planned out your goals thoroughly, it should be easy to say “no” to things that don’t contribute to your vision. Many of us tend to fail in this department as we don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.

Most of us are people-pleasers and have a hard time saying no. Yet, it’s necessary if you want to focus your time and efforts on doing things that can take you where you want to be in 1, 5, and 10 years.

Heading into 2021, I encourage you to exercise discernment and practice saying “no” to the things that aren’t in alignment with your business. You may be surprised by how much more time and energy you’ll have to do what truly matters to you!
